Prototype Diesel Engine Blocks

Grainger and Worrall

One of the global leaders in casting development, Grainger and Worrall worked in collaboration with SXL to supply the UK’s biggest car manufacturer with prototype 6-cylinder diesel engine blocks. Just under 100 off engine blocks were required at this critical manufacturing stage. SXL were tasked with fully machining these large Aluminium castings, assembling cylinder liners and caps, line boring, pressure testing and then 100% verification of the parts produced.

With delivery dates being critical and working to a very tight deadline, SXL set up a project plan to cope with the required aggressive delivery schedule.

“Communication is key, we work with an open door policy here at SXL”

Spencer Curtis, Business Manager at SXL, explains that flexibility is key when working in the Automotive industry:

“When our customers come to us with new projects, the ability for us to be flexible and react to their needs is of paramount importance to our business. In this instance, the project was already running behind schedule and had been experiencing several issues resulting in delays. SXL needed to react quickly, get a production line up and running and start furnishing the end customer with product whilst exceeding their quality expectations. Communication is key, SXL work with an ‘open doors’ policy that enables customers to come on site at any given time. This gives them the confidence that delivery dates will be met, and quality will not be compromised”

“Our job knowledge is key”

Tony Cornwell, SXL’s Team Lead, details how job experience is key with projects like this:

“When projects come to SXL that are running behind schedule, our job knowledge is key in getting the customer the product they require in extremely short lead times. In this instance, having worked with this customer for many years on similar projects, whilst liaising closely with them, I was able to begin machining parts without even having a fully detailed drawing to work from. It was this experience that enabled us to get up and running so quickly, and not only prevent further delays but claw back some of the lost time which is invaluable to the OEM.”
