Magnesium machining: risks and benefits

Magnesium is a highly flammable metal, especially the swarf and dust that are created during the machining process (it’s no wonder that one of its main uses is for flares and fireworks!)

Water cannot extinguish a magnesium fuelled blaze; in fact, it would make the fire worse.

The risks posed by magnesium machining are significant and this is the main reason that very few companies in the UK offer this service. SXL’s proven safety record combined with decades of experience and stringent safety practices make them experts in the magnesium field.

What are the benefits to machining magnesium?

The main appeal is its weight, its strength to weight ratio exceeds all other structural metals. Low density equates to less weight, which in the automotive industry is a huge plus – better fuel efficiency.

Magnesium is easy to machine regarding the cutting force required. It requires a low cutting force which means that there is a reduced load on the tool body and cutter allowing for higher cutting speeds and feed rates. This produces less tool wear, which reduces the cost and saves time as there are less tool changes.
